Private Tutors & Online Sellers – latest focus in HMRC VAT Crackdown
As part of its wider clampdown on VAT avoidance, HMRC will now be carefully analysing data within its ‘connect’ computer system to seek out private tutors and online sellers who are avoiding paying tax on extra earnings.
HMRC claims its attention will now be turned to professionals who use their expertise to earn extra money as a secondary income. This could include dance and exercise teachers, academic and music tutors, life coaches etc…
In addition to this, the department will also scrutinise businesses and individuals using online auction and selling sites to trade goods. HMRC are not interested in those who sell items on an irregular basis, rather sellers who make regular sales with the clear intent of making a profit.
